Cosmetics are everyday consumer products. In addition to classic cosmetics such as make-up and perfume, these include personal care products: dental care products, shampoos, soaps etc. Consumers expect more and more choice and positive effects. In order for manufacturers to keep up with their competitors, they improve 25% of their formulations every year. In addition, the EU Cosmetics Directive/Cosmetics Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 stipulates that every cosmetic product on the European market must be safe. Manufacturers are therefore obliged to initiate a scientific safety test before launching a product on the market.
In the European Union, the use of animals to test cosmetics has been prohibited by law since 2013. Against this background, alternative methods for testing cosmetics in vitro are relevant.
Biotesys uses special in vitro models to test the efficacy and safety of cosmetic products. For example, skin-lightening substances or self-tanning products can be analyzed. The results can be transferred almost directly to the future user. There are also organotypic models for testing the effect or safety of oral care products, e.g. toothpaste or mouthwash. Biotesys can also be used to substantiate health claims.
