Raw materials obtained from plants, so-called botanicals, are often used in a wide variety of product groups.

Botanicals contain a large number of bioactive compounds whose interactions and synergistic or antagonistic effects are often not well understood. The composition of the active ingredients can also vary greatly depending on the place of cultivation, climate, time of harvest, and processing, thus influencing the efficacy and safety of the end product. 

The consistent quality of the raw materials used is crucial in order to substantiate product claims. Standardized in vitro test batteries for defined physiological effects are suitable for identifying and quantifying the spectrum of effects of botanicals. This means that the determination of aggregate physiological effects can be used as a test and control method in quality management, in addition to classic ingredient analysis.
