Overview of Analytical Methods for Botanical Ingredients and Dietary Supplements

The following overview provides you with detailed information on selected botanical raw materials and relevant analytes that can be examined using standardized analytical methods. Depending on the objective – whether to ensure bioavailability, as part of food studies, or to assess product quality and raw materials – the overview offers valuable guidance for planning your analyses. The legend below provides additional background information regarding the intended use and the resulting benefits for your product development and quality assurance.

Bioavailability

Bioavailability studies are used to clarify relevant parameters such as absorption, toxicity, and optimal active ingredient formulation. Whether for the reformulation of products or product complexes, or to support certain products – data on bioavailability help to meet regulatory requirements and/or guide decisions on the selection and formulation of suitable raw materials. Customers benefit by being able to bring safe, effective, and optimally formulated products to market cost-efficiently. Conceptually, this can be investigated using in vitro models or human studies. The absorption of marker substances is determined analytically.

Food study

Food studies examine specific formulations with regard to nutrition-related questions of bioactive compounds. The aim of these studies is to demonstrate health-related effects in support of product concepts and, if applicable, to provide scientific substantiation of health claims for market communication.

Product quality

Do you want to systematically improve or optimize existing formulations, or need to demonstrate quality standards? Through comparative analyses and external, independent quality assurance, the reliability and safety of products can be proven and improved. Customers directly benefit through increased market appeal, consumer trust, and long-term improved product performance.

Raw material evaluation

Raw material evaluation involves the detailed analysis of the raw materials used with respect to customer-defined quality specifications. This reduces risks related to changing cultivation conditions and quality fluctuations and ensures consistent product quality. Customers benefit from greater transparency in supplier selection, as well as enhanced product integrity and compliance with quality standards.
